Nagoya, Japan, November 13, 2013 – Olympic champions and world’s top ranked Brazil are the only undefeated team after two days of competition at the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

Brazil scored a straight-set victory over Thailand in the first match of Wednesday followed by wins of Russia and United States over Dominican Republic and Japan, respectively.

Thailand fell to 0-2 and the other four sides have identical 1-1 records.

After a travel day on Thursday, the action resumes on Friday at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium with the following matches: Dominican Republic v Brazil, Russia v United States and Japan v Thailand.

Brazil relied on 17 points via blocks in their crushing victory over Thailand 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 to open the actions of the second day.

Adenizia Silva and Tandara Caixeta shared the top offensive honors with 14 points apiece while the veteran Walewska Oliveira contributed 10 points in the win. Thailand’s Onuma Sittirak totaled 12 points as the only player with double digits on the defeated side.

Seven Brazilian players scored at least two blocks for the match with Silva, Caixeta and Oliveira registering three apiece.

“Everything worked well for us with our strategic plan today,” Brazil’s captain Fabiana Claudino said. “We blocked, served and attacked well.”

Russia recorded a tournament-high 21 blocks in their four-set victory over Dominican Republic 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15.

Victoriia Chaplina topped Russia with 19 points, including three blocks, while Liubov Shashkova and Iulia Morozova added 16 and 11, respectively. Bethania De la Cruz and Prisilla Rivera each registered 12 points while Gina Mambru had 11.

Morozova and Natalia Dianskaya notched six and five blocks, respectively, to lead the Russian defense at the net.

“We played as one tonight,” Russia’s Ekaterina Pankova commented after the match. “We lost the second set but came back together and I think we played better tonight than in yesterday's match.”

Jordan Larson-Burbach and Kelly Murphy each scored 20 points to lead United States to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21). Kristin Hildebrand added 16 with four blocks.

Yuki Ishii led Japan with 19 points and Saori Kimura finished with 13 tallies. The Americans held a 13-7 advantage in the blocking charts.

“Every time we play Japan it is a battle,” Kristin Hildebrand said. “We blocked and defended well and did a good job of executing our game plan. We also passed and served well.”
