Kiraly’s mission: Take his team to unknown lands

Karch Kiraly, the male player of the century, is aiming at an elusive target as coach of the U.S. Women's team

Nagoya, Japan, November 13, 2013 – Karch Kiraly, the only player in  history to win Olympic gold medals in both volleyball and beach volleyball, is a man on a mission now that he has taken the helm of the ship with the U.S. Women’s National Team.

His goal: To conduct the squad to the golden land he already visited in 1984 and 1988 as part of the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team and then in 1996 along with Kent Steffes playing on the sand.

The coach of the American side taking part in the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup in Nagoya and Tokyo talked about his plans and thoughts while fielding questions from the media at the press conference following the loss to Brazil in the opening day of the competition on Tuesday.

“My goal is someday to have U.S. win the gold at the Olympic Games, someday to have U.S. win the gold at the World Championships and, someday to have U.S. win the gold at the World Cup,” Kiraly said.

“My job is to help facilitate this and I hope it will happen sooner than later,” he added.

The American women have won three silver medals at the Olympic Games, including the last two editions when ended up losing to Brazil, twice they have been runner-ups at the World Championship, and they also finished second at the last World Cup in 2011.

Kiraly, who played under coach Doug Beal who is now CEO at USA Volleyball in his golden era, took over the coaching job after serving for a couple of years as assistant to Hugh McCutcheon.

The beginning of a new Olympic cycle may be the proper time for Kiraly to start putting together the pieces of the puzzle, and eventually bring the ship to the elusive port he discovered almost forty years ago.

Now, he hopes that “someday” can occur at the next Olympic chance in Rio de Janeiro.
