Dominican Republic scored a straight-set victory over Thailand to kick off the actions at the FIVB Women's World Grand Champions Cup in Nagoya on Tuesday

Nagoya, Japan, November 12, 2013 – Dominican Republic, Brazil and Japan started off on the right foot by winning their respective contests on day one of the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup at Nippongaishi Hall on Tuesday.

The Dominicans began the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Thailand behind a superb offensive performance of Bethania De la Cruz, who finished with 25 points, including five blocks and four aces.

“We are happy to get the win,” Dominican Republic’s coach Marcos Kwiek stated. “This was a tough match even though we won 3-0."

"They (Thailand) are well coached and were prepared to play us,” Kwiek added. “We had to really concentrate the entire match.”

Brazil had to battle two close sets with USA before claiming a 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-20) victory in the second match of the day.

Natalia Pereira and Fernanda Garay each recorded 13 points to lead the Brazilians while Kelly Murphy had a match-high 14 points for USA.

“We are happy about the result,” Brazilian coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes said. “But we had our ups and downs and lost eight counterattacks in the second set which made it difficult for us.”

“We practiced less than 15 days before coming here,” he added. “We have to keep going.”
