Manabe says teamwork keyed win over Russia

Japan joined Dominican Republic and Brazil at the top of the standings with three points apiece after one day of action at the FIVB Women's World Grand Champions Cup

Nagoya, Japan, November 12, 2013 - Japan's coach Masayoshi Manabe pointed out the good serves, neat defence and teamwork as the keys for the victory over Russia on Tuesday.

Japan coach - Masayoshi Manabe: Our serves and defense worked well tonight. Teamwork is very important. Russia has tall players and we don't, so we had to adjust. I was not worried when we lost the second set. We made some mistakes with our spikes. I kept encouraging the players and they responded.

Russia coach - Iury Marichev: Japan played very well today. We had a lot of problems and made a lot of mistakes. There were many things we did not do well.

Japan captain - Saori Kimura: We really wanted to win the first game. I'm relieved that we did. Russia has really strong blockers, but we never gave up. We will do our best against the U.S. tomorrow.

Japan player - Saori Sakoda: Our teamwork was good. I was nervous at first with our new strategy. I was happy that we could win.

Japan player - Yuki Ishii: I was hoping we would win. I did my best. I was able to do my job in the new strategy well with the help of my teammates.

Russia captain - Ekaterina Pankova: We are not satisfied. Japan did very well even when they were behind. We should play better than this. We have to forget today's result and concentrate on winning tomorrow.
