Russia team heads to Japan for Women's World Grand Champions Cup

Russia's women's team finished seventh in the 2013 World Grand Prix

Kobe, Japan, November 9, 2013 - With their roster set, current  European champions Russia are ready to face their competitors in the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

The women flew to Japan on November 9 in preparation for their first match on Tuesday against Japan.

Russia are looking for a stronger finish in the World Grand Champions Cup, after placing seventh in the 2013 World Grand Prix. Though the Russian team, led by coach Iury Marichev for the first time this season, narrowly missed out on a spot in this year’s World Grand Prix Finals, they regrouped and refocused in time to take the European Championship title.

Russia brings a long list of legendary names to the competition, who have all been a part of the most glorious chapter in the team's history, including Lioubov Sokolova and Natalia Obmochaeva.

Russia's best result in the World Grand Champions Cup was a first place finish in 1997.

The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup has had a different winner for each of its five previous editions with Cuba (1993), Russia (1997), China (2001), Brazil (2005) and Italy (2009) all claiming the title. The US captured the silver medal in the 2005 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in its only podium finish in the five previous editions.

The FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup traditionally heralds the end of the international volleyball season and it has been renowned for always throwing up surprises.

The women’s tournament runs from November 12 to 17, 2013.
