Brazil announce Women's World Grand Champions Cup roster

Brazil are hoping to cap off an excellent year with the World Grand Champions Cup title, having already won the World Grand Prix, the South American Championship, the Alessio Cup and the Montreux Volley Masters this season.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, October 23, 2013 – Jose Roberto Guimaraes, coach of Brazil’s women’s national team, has announced the roster of 14 players who will take part in the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup in Japan.

The players who will take part in next month's tournament are Claudia Fabiola (setter); Sheilla and Monique (opposites); Fernanda Garay; Natalia; Tandara and Gabi; Thaísa (central); Fabiana; Juciely Adenízia; Fabi and Camila Brait (liberos). The team will train at the Centre for Volleyball Development in Saquarema in preparation for the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

The sixth edition of the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup will be held in Japan from November 12 to 17 at the Nagoya Nippongaishi Hall and Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Held every four years, it remains to be seen if a new winner will emerge from the tournament – as has been the case with each of the past five editions – or if this year will result in a second victory for one of the teams.

The current Olympic champions are the favourites going into this year’s tournament.

Following their gold medal win at the 2012 London Olympics, Brazil were also the dominant force in this year’s FIVB World Grand Prix. With five wins in 15 straight sets, the Finals in Sapporo, Japan was a show of strength from Brazil’s volleyball wizards. Ze Roberto’s team returns to the country looking to claim one more title this year.

It has been a successful few months for the Brazil team, who also clinched the 18th South American Championship (which qualified them automatically for the Grand Champions Cup) when they beat Venezuela in straight sets 3-0 in September. They also have the Montreux Volley Masters and Alassio Cup titles under their belt this season.

Brazil had a disappointing finish to the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup four years ago when they had to settle for second place behind Italy. With that win, Italy became the fifth title holder in the tournament after Cuba (1993), Russia (1997), China (2001). For their part, Brazil last found themselves at the top of the podium at the 2005 edition of the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup.

Currently sitting at the top of the FIVB world rankings, Brazil will take on world No. 2 USA on day 1 of the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup tournament at the Nagoya Nippongaishi Hall.
