USA, ranked second in the world, continue its journey
with volleyball legend Karch Kiraly taking charge of the team. Early this year,
Kiraly had already taken USA to seize the season-opening tournament, the Pan
American Cup, with a perfect record that qualified them for the 2014 FIVB
Volleyball World Grand Prix.
USA completed the five-week long 2013 World Grand Prix
in sixth place, falling short of defending their three-year reign at the
premier annual women’s volleyball event. The team missed its top performers
Destinee Hooker, Megan Hodge, Foluke Akinradewo, Logan Tom and Tayyiba
Haneef-Park but banked on the new roster of talents. The team went back to the
drawing board and eventually proved why they are one of the best in the world
by seizing the NORCECA gold in their four-set duel against the Dominican
Republic. With the positive turn of events, USA won the ticket to represent the
NORCECA zone at the World Grand Champions Cup.
USA have been a dominant bloc in the continental championship, bagging a total
of seven golds, 11 silvers and three bronzes in 23 editions. In other
competitions, USA proudly kept a collection of Olympic medals – three silver
medals (1984, 2008, 2012) and a bronze medal (1992) – as well as silver and
bronze medals at the World Championship and World Cup.
