Voronkov says players overcame exhaustion to secure victory

Russia mentor Andrey Voronkov was pleased with his team's performance in the game with USA

Tokyo, Japan, November 24, 2013 - Russia finished their campaign at the 2013 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup with a straight win over USA to claim silver in what was their first appearance in the competition.

Russia coach Andrey Voronkov: I'm very happy with the win. Our goal was to win every game here. I felt the first set was crucial to win and we did. We had to recover from mental and physical exhaustion after yesterday's match. Our national team fought together in the World League, European Championships and now here. This tournament has proven our position as a national team.

U.S. coach John Speraw: It was a difficult match for us. They pressured us from the service line. I thought we passed well early but we didn't get enough production from our outside hitters.. Russia has so many weapons that you have to take advantage when you have the chance and we didn't. We lost to a better team tonight.

Russia captain Sergey Makarov: We played very well. We played with a lot of confidence. We had a tough time with serves by Anderson in the first set. We played better in the second half of the match. We played against some very good teams here and are now No. 2 in the world behind Brazil.

Russia player Nikolay Pavlov: Everybody was tired after yesterday's five-set match. We were exhausted. That made it difficult at the start of this game. We knew the first set was going to be important and we went and got it. We fought through and established our own style of play.

USA captain Sean Rooney: We wanted to finish the tournament on a better note. We learned a lot at this event. Even though it was a difficult loss, I am really proud of this team and look forward to next summer.

USA player Matthew Anderson: I am excited for next year and the future. We can do some great things with this team. I am disappointed we kind of gave up a bit in the third set and let them run off several points. My role in this tournament was to be our big gun and terminate a lot of balls. I will play the role I am needed in.
