USA crowned at NORCECA Men’s Championship

USA players exploded in celebration after winning the last point of the title match against Canada before a full house at Langley Events Centre on Saturday

Langley, Canada, September 29, 2013 - The United States outplayed Canada in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-14) to win the gold medal at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship and in the process earned the ticket to the FIVB Grand Champions Cup on Saturday

A full crowd of around 5,000 spectators at the Langley Events Centre watched the American side to capture their eight gold medal and fourth of the last six editions of the biennial tournament.

Matthew Anderson, eventually elected MVP of the tournament, topped USA with 17 points, including three aces, while William Priddy and Maxwell Holt finished with 11 apiece. On the Canadian side, Dallas Soonias recorded 9 and John Gordon Perrin added 7 points.

“At the end of the day, the most important tournament we play in, besides the Olympics themselves, is the NORCECA tournament,” USA Coach John Speraw stated. “For us to come here and win like we did is a wonderful achievement for our program.”

“We got outplayed completely by the USA,” Canadian Coach Glenn Hoag said. “We couldn’t receive so we couldn’t establish any offense and they played great block defense. We had a chance in the first set but we made too many unforced errors.”

“This was our best match of the tournament,” American captain Sean Rooney said. “We put a lot of pressure on them with our serve and that was something we were working on since World League ended.”

Cuba won the bronze medal in a five setter against Puerto Rico (27-29, 25-27, 25-20, 27-25, 15-12). The victory allowed Cuba to keep alive their streak of stepping on the podium in the 23 editions of the competition.

Cuba team had a balanced attack and was able to overcome a 0-2 deficit to take the come-from-behind victory in the match that lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes.

Rolando Cepeda topped with 18 points, while David Fiel closed with 16. Abraham Gavilan scored 13, Yordan Bisset 12 and Jorber Quintana 10. Puerto Rico

Ezequiel Cruz was the top scorer with 23 points for Puerto Rico, that had a 2-0 lead and also had a very solid production with Mannix Roman (17 points), Juan Vazquez (12) and captain Enrique Escalante (12).
