Brenda Castillo stands out in a land of giants

Tokyo, Japan, November 11, 2009 – The FIVB 2009 Women’s World Grand Champions Cup is providing the perfect stage for some of the greats in Volleyball to illustrate their infectious skill and flair however, one of the brightest stars in the game is also participating and her name is Brenda Castillo.

The Dominican Republic libero is some kind of Lilliputian in a land of giants, a very common image of today’s Volleyball dominated by the big players but also complemented with the presence of those defensive supporting actors named liberos.
Even though her size and limited role, the diminutive teenager is blossoming into one of the most outstanding components of the Dominican Republic team participating in this year’s FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

Castillo, 17, one of the youngest players in the tournament, was selected as the Most Valuable Player in this year’s FIVB Women Junior World Championship in Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico and also took home the top individual honors in the 2008 Women’s Junior NORCECA Continental Tournament in Saltillo, Mexico.

Nicknamed “Chin-Chin” which means “small portion” in Dominican slang, Castillo has an ebullient personality, one that she takes to the playing court where she exhibits fiery competitive spirit and feline agility combined with leadership qualities.

“I am very proud to be competing here against the champions of the different continents,” says the player listed generously at 1.68 meters. “I took part this year in the Junior World Championship but I was ahead of the group only because of my earlier experience playing against older players.”

Castillo discussed the importance of the libero player and the defensive part of the game in modern Volleyball.

“As libero player I understand my role which I consider as important as that of the girls in charge of the offense. The motivation is very critical and to transmit my inside energy to my teammates is also of benefit for the group,” says Castillo. “When I get in I am always aiming to win very badly and try to give 150 percent on the court.”

Castillo understands the exposure that taking part in a competition like the Grand Champions Cup gives as she adds: “It is so important for me to show the people around the world the kind of job I can do. My ultimate dream is to play in the foreign leagues like my other teammates, which is only reserved for a few great players of my position. Besides that, my goal is to continue growing as an athlete, and to help my team to reach higher levels.”

Judging by her performances over the first two days of the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup to date, she is doing the absolutely perfect job.
