Defense was the key: Barbolini

Italy Coach Massimo Barbolini

Today, I'm really satisfied with my team because we played a good match. It's always difficult to play against Brazil. We paid a lot of attention regarding our defense to try not to make so many mistakes.

Now we must think about tomorrow. We are waiting for a hard match against Japan, so from tonight we will work on doing our best for tomorrow.

(Re Eleonora Lo Bianco – is she the best setter in the world?)

Yes, I would say she is the strongest setter in the world. She makes good choices from a tactical point of view, combined with good ability from the technical point of view. Over a tournament, when one ball can change the match, precision and tactical choices from the setter is very important. Now we have the strongest in the world and we try to use it.

(Comment re. Simona Gioli)

I think what she has done in the European Championship and what she is doing now is enough. Now she is the strongest middle blocker in the world and very strong in attack. If you see her matches from this year, you can see what she can do.

(Re. Weak start to the tournament – what did you change?)

Nothing special; it was normal. We had three days after arriving in Japan and we had to restart after four rounds of the Italian Championship. There was a little bit of risk for our first matches, but it was the only thing to do to arrive at this tournament while respecting the Italian League. The first two matches we didn't play so well, but now we are playing better – but this tournament is not over yet. There is a very difficult match tomorrow and now I want to think about this match.

Italy No. 12 Francesca Piccinini

I'm really satisfied with this result because it's not easy to win against a strong team like Brazil. Today, we played very well and were well organized – our blocking and defense were good and we didn't make too many errors. And we concentrated so that we could play better. And we had a strong determination to win this match.

(Re. Japan game on Sunday)

We must concentrate even more because Japan play very well. I think it will be important for us to play our own style of volleyball. The important thing is to win against Japan and take the title.

Brazil Coach Ze Roberto

I think Italy was better than us. From the start of the first set, they played better than us and we made many mistakes, especially blocking. As for counterattacking and other plays, Italy was better than us. But we are a young team and we have room to improve, so we will practice harder and try to get better.

(Re. Tomorrow's preparations)

Needless to say, I'm sure we will play better. We can still get the title, so we will try to do our best and hope to finish in a better condition.

Brazil Captain Danielle Lins

We knew from the beginning it would be a difficult game, but I never expected this result. Tomorrow, we need to win, so we must do what we have to do and hope that Japan beats Italy.
