General remarks

·         The successful result was the external expression of a continuous developmental process and play culture in Turkish female volleyball. .

·         After the second rank in the 2003 European Championships and its regular quali-fication for the final round in the continental championship since then, the Turkish team continued its impressive development from rank 10 in the WCH 2006 to finish on rank 6 in the 2010 World Championship.

·         The composition of the team is promising for the future with experienced (WCH 2006: 6) and many younger players (7 born 1986 or later) - the average of age was 24,6 years; average body height was 186 cm(without libero), 6 players 187 cm or even taller; stable starting line-up during the whole tournament.

Service

·         Domination of powerful jumpfloats with low trajectory; no.12 performed distancefloat; all servepositions are applied.

·         Left-handed no. 17 Neslihan (best scorer) performs risky jumpspin powerserves and changes between serve position 6 and 1.

·         Good teamperformance among the international top, rank 3 (7% aces / 11% faults). 2 players were among the TOP 10 in individual ranking. High score for successful serves (12% aces) at the expense of a high number of faults (o.17 Neslihan: 28%, no. 8 Toksoy 14%).

Reception

·         3-players formation against jumpfloats und floats independent of the kind of service, of the rotation and the position of the opponent’s serviceplayer. Libero covers a wider range of actions and acts with very high precision and with high stability in her actions (58% + / 5% -); good positioning and technique (lateral serve reception (left and right).

·         3-players formation res. 3+1-receptionformation against jumppower serve (formation is supplemented by no.17).

·         Teamperformance among the international top (54% + / 6% -); attacker no.12 Gümus: 5th in individual ranking (55% + / 3% -).

Set / Attack - Complex I and Complex II

·         Young and tall setter (20, 186 cm) finishes 5th in individual ranking showing a well balanced performance. Her agile and technically-coordinative elegant mode of playing still shows a lot of developmental potential. Focus on under-hand set as basictechnique of all players.

·         Complex I: Focus on attacks on outside positions 4 (no.12/17) and 2 with effective quick attacks. MB no.14 performed quick attacks on pos.3 and attacks with single-legged jump-offs from pos. 2 with great success. She was supported by left-handed no. 17 Neslihan primarily with power attack with run-up from outside positions. As an alternative: back-court attacks are performed regularly.

·         Complex II: Major stress on attacks from outside positions. Frequent application of back-court attacks, in most cases as “emergency” solutions, but not integrated into quick attack combinations. Consequent solution of freeball situations by quick attacker no. 14.

·         Attack organisation was a mix of power attacks and tactical spikes, in most cases trying to incorporate diagonal player no. 17 Neslihan (37% of all attacks of TUR).

·         Good team performance (rank 6: 43% + / 15% -), but still a significant gap when comparing it with the performance of the worldchampion, best attacker Neslihan ranking 15th among the “best spikers”.

Block / Defense

·         In summary a medium efficiency of the block-field-defense-system with performance potential especially with respect to the perfectly coordinated and quick movement play close to the net and on the field. (8th in team ranking).

·         2-players‘ block and one player block on outside positions as well as one-player block on pos. 3 only.

·         Compact cooperation between block players and the players on the outside positions still has potential for further development (technique and speed of leg work towards left and right, positioning and arranging the block, practical application of scouting information).

·         Only medium teamperformance (not among the TOP 10); block player 18th res. 24th  in individual ranking.

·         Basic structure of field defense: Pos. 6 back (tends to have a starting position in the midfield) with the line players on pos. 1/5 becoming responsible for covering the area close to the block, in dependence of the situation with and without covering the area close to the block and reinforcement of the diagonal (doubledefense) The different formations to handle the attacks are not always well organized.

·         The libero always played on pos. 5 with a range of action to the attacking positions (good positioning, quick reactions, ranking among TOP 10).
