In
2002, the FIVB supported refugees in East Timor and Pakistan.
500 volleyballs and 100 nets were sent to the UNHCR to
be used for the enjoyment of the refugees.
The efforts of the UNHCR in East Timor are limited to the temporary
reception, repatriation to places of origin and the reintegration
of the returnees from West Timor.
The donated Volleyball equipment was used at the
Transit Centres where refugees are housed for one to two days
before returning to their place of origin.
Between 600 to 1,300 returnees are accommodated at the
Transit Centres each month. The living conditions are very basic and the provision of
balls and nets allowed the returnees to make this time less
stressful.
The refugee camps of Pakistan along the border of Afghanistan are
currently providing primary education to approximately 130,000
refugee children at almost 345 schools.
The donation of the balls and nets was used at the
schools for the enjoyment of the refugee youth.
Volleyball can help to provide children with an area of
self-discovery outside the constraints of domestic and social
responsibilities and from the trauma of flight.
