London, Great Britain, July 30, 2012 – Hui Ruoqi nailed 21 points, including five blocks and two aces, to spark China to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 29-31, 25-22) victory over Turkey in the second day of the women’s volleyball tournament of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
It was the second win for China in as many outings while the loss left Turkey at 0-2. The winners held a 17-6 advantage in the blocking category and trailed 7-4 in the aces division.
Four other Chinese players concluded the contest with double figures in scoring as Yang Junjing uncorked 16 points with five blocks included, Wang Yimei contributed 14 and Ma Yunwen and Zhang Lei chipped in with 12 and 10 respectively.
For the Turkey forces, Neslihan Darnel and Eda Erdem finished with 16 points apiece and the threesome of Neriman Oszoy, Esra Gumus and Gozde Sonsirma each charted 12 tallies.
China quickly pulled ahead in the first set, with almost all their points coming from Hui Ruoqi, who blocked and spiked with equal effectiveness. Turkey's Gozde Sonsirma, Eda Erdem and Neslihan Darnel pulled points back, but Hui dominated the play, scoring from all over the court to help China take the set 25-20.
The second set started tighter, with Yang Junjing joining Hui in collecting points for China, while Sonsirma, Erdem, Darnel and the spiking of Neriman Ozsoy kept Turkey in contention. But China got 15-10 ahead as they made fewer errors, and with Zhang Lei and Wang Yimei adding to their attacking options, the world No.3 side won the set 25-20.
The third set saw Turkey take a narrow lead during the early stages, again led by Erdem, Darnel and Ozsoy. China's range of attacking options, co-ordinated brilliantly by captain and setter Wei Qiuyue, was boosted by the spiking and blocking of Ma Yunwen. China edged back into the lead, but the spirited Turks stayed level and got to set point. China pegged them back again and again, but in an exciting climax Turkey took the set 31-29.
China showed their class at the start of the fourth set, going into the lead thanks to Hui and Ma. Turkey continued to battle hard but the all round ability of China was too strong and they took the set 25-22.
China, who have a 100% record, face USA on Wednesday. Turkey, who have lost two straight, will hope to improve against Serbia.
