Press release

First victory is important for Italy's Barbolini

Italy topped Dominican Republic in blocks and serves to claim the victory

Milagros Cabral, Captain of Dominican Republic: We started playing against one of the strongest teams in the world and we did a great effort with our attacks but also made too many mistakes. In the third set they started to serve better and we lost our concentration.

On facing Russia in their next match on Monday:
"They are very tall, but we are a team with strength and speed - and that is how we can beat them."

On the performance of Dominican libero Brenda Castillo:
"For me, she is one of the best in the world, a spectacular player. She's very young, but it is incredible to watch her play."

Bethania De la Cruz, Dominican Player: We lacked a bit of discipline, power and concentration. We came here with very high expectations and the goal is to get a medal. We are going to concentrate in the next match to reach that goal."

Marcos Kwiek, Coach of Dominican Republic: It was a very difficult match playing against a team that commits very few mistakes. It is our first match in a long tournament and we need to correct some situations. We will continue working to achieve our goals.

Eleonora Lo Bianco, Captain of Italy: I am satisfied about getting the 3 points for the victory. It was our first match in the Olympics and it was difficult to handle not only for the young players but also for the veterans. I am satisfied.

Massimo Barbolini, Coach of Italy: It was important to start winning. In fact it was a tough match. We started improving little by little in our defense and transition. I am satisfied with my team especially with the way they played in the third set, which was pivotal.”
