Preparations for Tokyo 2020 discussed at FIVB Sports Events Council meeting

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 6, 2020 – Preparations for Tokyo 2020, the new World Ranking System and the rise of the FIVB’s digital presence were just three of the topics discussed at the FIVB Sports Events Council meeting which took place this week.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F? opened the meeting, reiterating the importance of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which is less than six months away. As one of the most popular sports in Japan, and the birthplace of Olympic volleyball, the eyes of the world will be on the Ariake Arena from July 24 - August 9.

Earlier this month, the FIVB launched its new World Ranking System which will ensure a more accurate and reactive process than ever before. The FIVB President also highlighted the streamlined events calendar for 2021-2024, allowing more rest time for athletes and delivering high-quality competitions around the world.

President Ary Graça shared some of the incredible digital and social media numbers that the FIVB platforms achieved in 2019, including 11 billion social media impressions, increases in follower count across all channels and the rise of the FIVB’s Facebook page to third in the International Federation rankings.

“The FIVB is at the cutting edge of technology, and this is clear through our TV, digital and social media channels,” President Ary Graça said. “This year is huge for volleyball, with the eyes of the world ready for Tokyo 2020.

“Our goal is to continue working towards becoming the world’s number one family sport, and by taking volleyball, beach volleyball and snow volleyball all over the world, I believe we will achieve this.”

In addition, the Council looked ahead to the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championships, as well as the Volleyball Nations League and the  FIVB Challenger Cup, which will take place later this year.
