10,000 celebrate Iran's third Asian men's title

Iran celebrate their title at the 2019 Men's Asian Championship at home in Tehran.
Lausanne, Switzerland, September 21, 2019 - Iran won their third men's Asian Championship title when they defeated Australia 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) Saturday evening the the final of this year's edition before more than 10,000 fans at home in Tehran.

Coming into the final, Australia had been the only undefeated team in the tournament. The twofinalists had previously met in pool play, with the 'Volleyroos' prevailing in four sets.

Amir Ghafour with a match high 20 points and an unstoppable 19/26 for 73% attack in the final led Iran, who outplayed Australia on the net with seven blocks and a 56% (48/86) attacking efficiency, while restricting their opponents to four stuffs and a mere 33% (22/68).

It was Iran's third title in the 44-year history of the competition, after threir back-to-back successes in 2011 and 2013.

Earlier on Saturday, Japan held off Korea 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22) for the bronze medal, with Kunihiro Shimizu scoring 21 points.

• The top eight secured tickets for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Asian qualifiers in January. With Japan already qualified to the Olympics as hosts, 9th-placed Qatar got the extra ticket.

• The top ten are automaticlally qualified for the finals of the 2021 Asian Championship. If the host of that edition is amongst the top ten, then 11th-ranked Thailand will get a ticket.
