Brazil remain top side in South America

Brazil celebrate another South American victory
Santiago, Chile, September 15, 2019 – Brazil won their 32nd South American Volleyball title on Sunday when they defeated long-time rivals Argentina 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 29-31, 25-20, 15-13) in front of a packed crowd at the Monticello Arena.

Alan Souza was named tournament MVP and his work with Yoandy Leal was crucial to Brazil winning the title. Leal weighed in with 11 points and it is the former Cuba player’s first title since he switched to play for Brazil.

“I think that the squad’s unity made it possible for us to come back from losing the first match,” Leal said. “It was a very tough match.”

The match was Brazil’s second win over Argentina in the tournament having earlier beaten them in the pool stage where they also enjoyed victories over Ecuador and Colombia.
Team captain Douglas scored the winning point that sends Renan Dal Zotto’s team to the FIVB World Cup in Japan in confident mood.

“A South American final is always difficult and very important for our team, let alone against Argentina, who have a very strong squad,” Douglas said. “It is a very important that our young teams gain this experience and gathers more energy for their next challenge.”

Chile won the bronze medal, the first time in 26 years that they finished on the podium. The hosts defeated Venezuela 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 15-13).
