Lausanne, Switzerland, August 13, 2019 - Beach volleyball was today confirmed as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games sports programme after the 71 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) approved the proposal to retain the sport following its hugely successful debut in Gold Coast last year.

The Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) met at Edgbaston Stadium, home of Warwickshire Country Cricket Club, to announce the addition of beach volleyball, as well as women’s T20 cricket and para table tennis.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin said: “Today is a historic day for the Commonwealth Games and I am delighted that we can now confirm Birmingham 2022 will have the largest ever female and para-sport programme in history.

“I would like to congratulate and formally welcome women’s T20 cricket, beach volleyball and para table tennis to the official sports programme for Birmingham 2022 and I know they will all help enhance what will be a spectacular and vibrant multi-sport event.”

Following the announcement, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:

“The FIVB is honoured that beach volleyball has once again been selected for the Commonwealth Games after its successful debut in Gold Coast last year.

“Volleyball is an inclusive sport that is enjoyed all over the commonwealth by people of all abilities and backgrounds. As a sports leader in gender equality, we are extremely proud to be part of Birmingham 2022, an event which is set to have the biggest female and para sports programmes in history.”

Beach volleyball proved to be one of the most popular sports at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, with every session sold out over seven days of exciting competition. In total, Birmingham 2022 expects to welcome 4,500 athletes across 18 sports, from 27 July - 7 August 2022.
