China celebrate qualification for Tokyo 2020

 
Ningbo, China, August 4, 2019 – China defeated Turkey 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) on Sunday to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after the two teams logged four-set victories on Saturday to set up a decider on the third day of the Tokyo Volleyball Qualification Pool B tournament in Ningbo.

China, who have won three gold medals in Olympic Games, was led by Zhu Ting (20 points) and Zhang Changning (16), while Turkey's leading scorers was Ebrar Karakurt (15).

In the first match of the day in Ningbo, Germany defeated the Czech Republic 3-0.

Czech Republic - Germany (August 4, 2019)

Head-to-Head

• Germany and Czech Republic meet for the first time in the last seven world Olympic qualifying campaigns (1996-2020).
• These teams have met nine times at major world level (Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World Grand Prix, Nations League, Grand Champions Cup).
• Czech Republic (incl. Czechoslovakia) won the first four world level meetings, while Germany (incl. East and West Germany) won the last five.
• Their most recent world level meetings came in the 2017 World Grand Prix. Germany won 3-0 and 3-1.
• Czech Republic (incl. Czechoslovakia) lead the head-to-head with Germany (incl. East and West Germany) at the European championship: W13-L10.

Germany
• Germany lost their opening two matches in this year's world Olympic qualification tournament, against Turkey (3-1) and hosts China (3-1).
• Germany last qualified for the Olympic Games in 2004.
• Louisa Lippmann was Germany's top scorer against both Turkey (14 points, joint-most with Jana Franziska Poll) and China (21).
• Denis Hanke (5 points in total) scored three aces against China, more than any other player on the court.

Czech Republic
• Czech Republic's hopes for a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games ticket have suffered a blow after losses against China (3-0) and Turkey (3-1).
• Czech Republic appeared twice in the Olympic Games, as Czechoslovakia in 1968 and 1972. They finished in sixth and seventh place respectively.
• Andrea Kossanyiova was Czech Republic's top scorer against both China (17 points) and Turkey (13).
• Michaela Mlejnkova (10) was the only other player to reach double figures for Czech Republic against Turkey.

Head-to-Head

China
• Hosts China followed up a straight-sets victory over Czech Republic in their opener on Friday with a 3-1 win against Germany on Saturday.
• Three-times gold medal winners China have appeared nine times in the Olympic Games, all in the last nine editions.
• China qualified for the Olympic Games in their previous participation in a world Olympic qualification tournament, in 2000.
• China have won each of their last six matches in world Olympic qualification, since that 3-1 defeat against Italy in 2000.
• Ting Zhu was China's top scorer against both Czech Republic (14 points) and Germany (21).
• Ni Yan (12 points in total) won seven points from stuff blocks against Germany, at least five more than any of her teammates.

Turkey
• Turkey won 3-1 against Germany and Czech Republic in this year's world Olympic qualification tournament.
• Turkey's only participation in the Olympic Games was in 2012, when they finished in joint-ninth place alongside host nation Great Britain.
• Zehra Günes (22) and Meryem Boz (20) both reached the 20-point mark for Turkey in their 3-1 win over Czech Republic. Erbar Karakurt, Turkey's top scorer against Germany (16 points), remained on the bench.
• Günes and Kubra Caliskan both had a match-high five stuff blocks against Czech Republic, as many as all Czech players combined (5).
