Egonu strikes 32, makes VNL record books twice

Italy's Paola Egonu gets over the block of Serbia's Ana Bjelica and Mina Popovic as she scores 32 points to make the FIVB Volleyball Nations League record books.
Conegliano Veneto, Italy, May 30, 2019 - In her first full match of the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League Paola Egonu led Italy to a thrilling 3-1 win over Serbia in Conegliano Veneto with a 32-point scoring performance that makes her the second player this season to join the exclusive 'Over 30s Club'.

On her way to an entry in the list of players who have scored 30 points or more in a single match, the 20-year-old Italian opposite served seven aces, tying the all-time VNL serving record, which was held by Turkey's Eda Erdem from last year in her team's five-set defeat to Russia.

The 16 total aces of Italy against Serbia is also a new VNL record for a team serving effort in a single match. The previous record was 14 aces, held by Poland from their 3-2 win over China last year.

Egonu's other points today were 22 kills from 45 swings (49%) and three blocks.

Egonu makes the VNL scorers list for the second time. She had also scored 32 points last year when Italy lost to Japan in five sets in Hong Kong.

She was on the starting lineup for the first time in the current VNL, having only just played briefly agaist the Dominican Republic on Tuesday and sat out Wednesday's match against USA.

Earlier this season Poland's Malwina Smarzek had scored 30+ three times, including an all-time high of 41 points in four sets against Bulgaria on Tuesday.
