IOC Member Leeswadtrakul: Volleyball setting the example for sport

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 26, 2018 - FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F? met with Thai IOC Member Mrs Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul last week as the two watched Serbia’s exhilarating five-set win over Italy in the final of the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Championship together in Yokohama, Japan.

Ahead of the final, FIVB President Ary Graça, four Presidents and one 1st Vice-President of the Confederations, sat down with Mrs Leeswadtrakul to talk about the recent developments in volleyball all over the world, including digital innovation, the development of snow volleyball and preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“The FIVB continues to take big leaps forward by embracing new innovations, using new forms of media, and introducing sport-entertainment to grow its product,” Mrs Leeswadtrakul said. “Volleyball is now a 'sport for all', a truly global game that can be played in every continent on any climate and the new variations of volleyball such as snow volleyball have created a huge buzz. By giving more people the opportunity to participate in sport we can help make the world a better place. The world is changing and if sport is to stay relevant we have to change with it.  I think other sports organisations could gain a lot by following the FIVB's fine example.”

“I passionately believe in the growth of our sport around the world,” President Ary Graça said. “Volleyball is a sport where people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities can have fun, stay healthy and learn fundamental skills. The popularity of volleyball in Thailand is just one example, and it was exciting to see the women’s national team competing in both the VNL and World Championship this year.”
