Tandara leads way as Brazil rolls past Kazakhstan

 
Hamamatsu, Japan, October 4, 2018 -  Tandara Caixeta recorded a match-high 14 points as Brazil beat Kazakhstan 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-13) to close out play in Pool D at the FIVB Women's World Championship on Thursday night.

The South Americans have advanced to the second round of the tournament.

Fernanda Rodrigues added 12 points, while Gabriela Guimaraes contributed nine in the victory for Brazil.

Katerina Tatko, Yekaterina Zhdanova and Yana Petrenko all had seven points for Kazakhstan in the loss.

Brazil entered the match with a 3-1 record, having lost to only Serbia.

Kazakhstan came into the contest at 0-4 and had not won a set.

Brazil proved superior in all facets on the night, serving, blocking and attacking with flair primarily with reserve players.

Kazakhstan showed improvement over earlier matches in the pool, but was simply outpowered in the end. The did well in reception in the last two sets.

Brazil passed well in the early going of the opening set and was up 8-5 at the first TTO after a spike by Fernanda. Carolina Da Silva made a nice block to give Brazil a 14-7 lead. Brazil began scoring at will and soon had a 10-point margin at 18-8. A deft tap by Gabriela Guimaraes made it 22-9 and Brazil claimed the set 25-11 when a Kazakh spike sailed wide.

Kazakhstan kept it close in the first part of the second set and trailed 8-6. The Kazakhs moved in front 11-10 on a service ace by Tatko. Down 12-10, Brazil coach Jose Guimaraes called a timeout. The Brazilians then ran off five straight points to go up 15-12. Kazakhstan hung in, but could not string together a series of points to take back the lead. A block by Rosamaria Montibeller made it 20-16 for Brazil. They closed out the set 25-20 on a spike that stood up to a challenge by Kazakhstan.

The Brazilians raced to a 7-1 lead in the final set as the looked to finish off the match. A block by Yana Petrenko pulled Kazakhstan within 8-4. Fernanda made a great save that libero Suelen Pinto directed to Caixeta to make it 15-7 for Brazil. The South Americans made the final push in clinical fashion and ended the set and match 25-13 on a soft tap by Pereira.
