Brazil bounces back with 3-0 victory over Kenya

Hamamatsu, Japan, October 3, 2018 - Natalia Pereira registered a match-high 12 points as Brazil downed Kenya 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-16) in Pool D action at the FIVB Women's World Championship on Wednesday night.

Tandara Caixeta added 11 points and Carolina Da Silva had eight in the victory.

Emmaculate Chemtai was the high scorer for Kenya with nine points in the defeat.

Brazil entered the match with a 2-1 record and coming off a resounding 3-0 loss to Serbia.

Kenya came in at 1-2 with a victory over Kazakhstan in their opening match.

The Brazilians displayed all of their significant skills on serve, block and attack in the win, while using several reserve players.

Kenya could just not cope with their more powerful foes in a contest that had few rallies.

The opening set was close until Brazil began to take charge by securing an 11-7 lead. A service ace by Carolina Da Silva made it 14-8 as Brazil stepped up the pace and began scoring almost at will. Kenya put up some resistance, pulling to within 16-12, but could not sustain it. Too often the Kenyans lost points on attacks that were blocked back over the net and fell into open space. Caixeta played well on attack as Brazil rolled to take the set 25-13.

Brazil quickly took an 8-2 advantage by the first TTO in the second set. The Kenyans again played with great energy, but were unable to string together a series of points. They committed several unforced errors that helped Brazil build up a big lead. Violet Makuto made a nice tap over the high block for a point, but it only reduced Kenya's deficit to 13-4. Brazil clinically moved through the rest of the set, ultimately taking it 25-10.

The final set mirrored the first two, as the Brazilians took control early and never looked back. The South Americans scored seven straight points to moved ahead 7-1. The Kenyans gamely tried to hang in, but could not match the overall skill level of their opponents. Pereira rose for a nice block to make it 14-7 for Brazil as they drove for the finish line. Kenya kept battling, with Sharon Chepchumba making some nice plays on attack, but Brazil closed out the set and match 25-16 on a spike by Rosamaria Montibeller.
