Tokyo 2020 unveil Olympic mascots

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 23, 2018 – The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were brought into focus today with the unveiling of the mascot for the Olympic Games that runs from July 24-August 9, 2020.

Miraitowa was presented to the Japanese public for the first time at a naming ceremony at the Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, along with the Paralympic Games mascot Someity. Both will become well-loved figures in Japan as the countdown to the Games continues.

Come Games-time they are sure to be regular figures at the volleyball and beach volleyball competitions.

Volleyball will again feature 12 teams per gender and all the action will take place at the Ariake Arena in the Tokyo Bay Zone. China and Brazil are the defending women and men’s champions, while USA’s women and Russia’s men will try and add to their gold-medal successes at the inaugural Volleyball Nations League this year.

Before then Japanese volleyball fans will be able to watch the new women’s world champions be crowned when the country hosts the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship. The tournament begins on September 29 and comes to a conclusion with the final in Yokohama on October 20.

Beach volleyball will take place at Shiokaze Park right on Tokyo’s waterfront. Twenty-four teams per gender will battle it out to succeed Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, and Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt as Olympic gold medallists.

Japan’s capital will have a taste of what to expect in 2020 this week as the city is hosting the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Tokyo Open at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza from July 24-29.
