Excitement builds at Gold Coast for Commonwealth Games quarterfinals

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 9, 2018 - The inaugural beach volleyball competition at the Commonwealth Games gears up on Tuesday with the beginning of the knockout stage at Coolangatta Beach in Australia's Gold Coast.

Pool play wrapped up on Monday with the last remaining quarterfinal berths decided before sellout crowds once again, as one men's and three women's sides claimed the last tickets.

Abubakar Kamara / Patrick Lombi of Sierra Leone clinched the last open berth in the men's quarterfinals, after their hard-earned 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) win in 42 minutes over Sri Lanka's Asanka Pradeep / Sashimal Yapa.

The Sierra Leone side join Cyprus' Jimmy Apostolou / Giorgos Chrysostomou in advancing as one of the best two of the third-ranked teams following the wrapup of pool play.

In the women's competition, Cyprus' Mariota Angelopoulou / Manolina Konstantinou secured their own berth in the quarterfinals overwhelming Renisha Stafford / Thornia Williams of Grenada 2-0 (21-3, 21-14) in 30 minutes.

The last two spots went to the best two of the third-ranked teams in the pools: Scotland's Beattie/Coutts (who had already completed pool play as of Sunday) and Rwanda's Denyse Mutatsimpundu / Charlotte Nzayisenga who beat Singapore's Ee Shan Lau / Wei Yu Ong 2-0 (21-11, 22-20) in 41 minutes today.

Each of the men's and women's events included twelve teams in three pools of four for the first phase. The top two of each pool and the best two of the third-ranked teams advanced to Tuesday's quarterfinals, which are followed by semifinals on 11 April and the medals matches on 12 April.
