FIVB President unveils plans for volleyball in Asia

FIVB President Graça is in Bangkok, Thailand to attend the 22nd Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) General Assembly
Bangkok, Thailand, November 14, 2017 - Ahead of the 22nd Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° has laid out his vision for the growth of volleyball and beach volleyball in Asia over the next eight years.
President Graça has spent time in China and Japan, visiting with national federations and potential sponsors as the FIVB targets expansion in the Asian market.

“The eyes of the Olympic Movement will be on the region over the next few years, with the next three Olympic Games being held here, and this is a fantastic chance for the FIVB,” President Graça said. “We were very successful at London 2012, and last year volleyball and beach volleyball were two of the most watched sports at Rio 2016. The FIVB’s aim is to continue and strengthen this popularity at Tokyo 2020.”

As well as speaking at the General Assembly on Wednesday, President Graça also attended the AVC’s Executive Committee meeting, where he shared the FIVB’s key targets for Asia.

“I believe that we can develop a beach volleyball culture in Asia,” President Graça continued. “With the emergence of elite athletes and world class teams, the next generation of volleyball players will be inspired to play our sport.

“This is the same strategy for men’s indoor volleyball in Asia. Traditionally the women’s game has been very strong, but our priority must be to raise the standard of the men’s game. It is a wonderful opportunity for us.”

A total of 47 federations are due to attend the AVC General Assembly, which will provide a platform for exchanging ideas between the federations and prepare comprehensive development plans for future growth of the sport in Asia.
