Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee preparing for iconic volleyball anniversary

President Ary Graça and Secretary General Fernando Lima met TOCOG President, Yoshiro Mori, to discuss the 2020 Olympic Games
Tokyo, Japan, September 7, 2017 - After meeting with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee (TOCOG) today, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said that the two organisations were united in their aim to make volleyball a success story at the next Olympic Games, marking the sport’s return to its Olympic birthplace, more than 50 years after it made its debut at Tokyo 1964.

President Graça and FIVB Secretary General Fernando Lima have been in Tokyo for the beginning of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup but took time to sit down with TOCOG President, Yoshiro Mori, and other members of the organising committee, as they discussed how best to promote both volleyball and beach volleyball in the build up to the Games in three years’ time.

“It was wonderful to see that Mr Mori and the TOCOG delegation are as excited about the future of volleyball and beach volleyball in Japan as we are,” President Graça said. “Volleyball joined the Olympic programme here in Tokyo, back in 1964, and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

“The passion for volleyball here is incredible, as we have already seen at the World Grand Champions Cup, and I am excited to watch the sport grow over the next three years.”

Mr Mori added: “The TOCOG is going to continue working closely with the FIVB to deliver spectacular volleyball competitions at Tokyo 2020. It will be particularly important as volleyball returns to the city where it made its debut.”
