Lausanne, Switzerland, September 2, 2017 – Chile shut out Venezuela in the second match of the South American qualification tournament to stay in contention for a spot at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria. Having lost to Argentina in four sets two days earlier, the Chileans have to rely on a favourable outcome of the last qualifier between Venezuela and Argentina to be held on Saturday.

The CSV qualification is a three-way tournament, taking place from August 30 through September 2 in the Argentinean cities of Jujuy and Salta. Argentina, Chile and Venezuela are vying for the single South American vacancy at Italy-Bulgaria 2018 that is still available. The tournament winner will join Brazil, the 2017 South American champions, to complete the continent’s contingent for the World Championship finals, scheduled to take place from September 10 through 30, 2018.

On Friday evening, at the Polideportivo Delmi in the Argentinean city of Salta, Chile took 70 minutes to hammer out a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-15) victory in a spectacular game against Venezuela.

Vincente Parraguirre made the biggest point contribution to coach Daniel Nejamkin’s squad’s success, scoring 15 times against Venezuela. Jhonlen Barreto was the top scorer on the losing side, with 12 points on his tally.

The decisive match between Argentina and Venezuela will take place on Saturday, September 2, at the Polideportivo Delmi in Salta, starting at 17:00 local time. The home team need to win at least two sets to qualify for Italy-Bulgaria 2018. If Venezuela manage a 3-0 or 3-1 victory, they will help Chile book a ticket to the World Championship. The game will be televised on TyC Sports with a live stream available on CSV’s official website.
