Belgium’s Koekelkoren & Van Walle eliminate 2013 world champions

Vienna, Austria, August 3, 2017 - Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle posted one of the biggest upsets of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships as the Belgium pair ousted 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands here Tuesday to highlight the first round of elimination at the $1-million event.

Competing in their first World Championships and seeded 19th in the competition, Koekelkoren and van Walle posted a 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-8) win in 48 minutes over the 10th-seeded Brouwer and Meeuwsen.  With the win, the Belgium tandem meets seventh-seeded Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak of Poland in the second round of elimination on Friday.


The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1 will feature 14 matches (eight men and six women) Friday at the state-of-the art venue at Donauinsel in Vienna.

A total of 216-matches will be contested over a 10-day period at the World Championships where the winning men’s and women’s teams will each split the $60,000 first-place prizes. The women’s medal matches will be played on Saturday and the men’s on Sunday. With 96 teams from 40 countries in the competition, pool play highlights the first six days of play with the featured court being the 10,000-seat Red Bull Beach Arena.
