Tandara leads Brazil to win over Dominican Republic

It was Brazil's first match since the Olympics last year
Manaus, Brazil, May 30, 2017 – With the FIVB World Grand Prix just over a month away, Brazil got into the groove on Tuesday with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21) warm-up victory over the Dominican Republic at the Amadeu Teixeira Arena in Manaus.

With the Montreux Volley Masters, the World Grand Prix, the South American Championship and the Grand Champions Cup ahead of them, Ze Roberto’s team will be keen to forget about the disappointment of the 2016 Olympics and look once again to the future.

Tandara excelled in the match and finished as the highest scorer with 18 points, while middle blocker Adenízia had 13. For the Dominican Republic, Paola Pena was the highest scorer with 13 points.

“It was an important game for us to know how we are going to perform from now on,” new Brazil captain Natalia said. “We know that we still have a lot of things to improve on. We have been together as a squad for more than a week and we are slowly forming into a good group. We are on the right track.”

Drussyla, who made her debut in the national team, thanked her teammates for their continued support: “Before the match I had a few butterflies, but I tried to stay calm and tried only to have a good game. This was Brazil's first game after the Olympic Games and it is only natural that we are still in a state of flux.”

Coach Ze Roberto was satisfied with the outcome.

“From the second set, we managed to make a simpler match and understand the game a little bit more,” he said. “I believe that every day we will play and synchronize better. Looking at the game as a whole, I liked the last three sets. Our serve worked after the first set and this made our game flow more.”

After the two friendlies against the Dominican Republic, the Brazilian women's volleyball team will head to Switzerland for the Montreux tournament from June 6 to 11.
