Thailand, Japan take top spots in Asian Women’s Club preliminary round

 
Japan's Hisamitsu Seiyaku Springs swept all their matches to emerge on top of Group B in the Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship
Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, May 27, 2017 – Thailand’s Supreme VC and Japan’s Hisamitsu Springs emerged on top of their respective pools after completing the preliminary round of the SMM 2017 Asian Women’s Club Samruk Kazyna Volleyball Championship at the Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace.  

Supreme VC won all of their matches in Group A, including Saturday’s 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19) win over Chinese Taipei’s Taiwan Power. Middle blocker Pleumjit Thinkaow bested all scorers with 17 points. Chatchu-on Moksri and Fatou Diouck were equally effective with 16 points each.

Japan’s Hisamitsu Seiyaku Springs likewise swept all matches to emerge as Group B leader. They completed pool play with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-19) win over Vietnam’s Vietin Bank. Yuka Taura and Akane Ukishima combined for 27 points as they swung from the flanks with much speed and precision.

Hosts Altay VC of Kazakhstan conquered Iran’s Sarmayeh Bank in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) to earn second place in Group A. Sana Anarkulova delivered 13 points, while Yunieska Robles contributed 11 points. Kristina Anikonova scored four blocks out of the team’s total of 10, to clamp down the Iranian club’s attacks. 

Earlier, China’s Tianjin Bohai Bank beat the Philippines’ Rebisco-PSL in straight sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-9), to earn the second spot in Pool B Yu Junwei charted 18 points and formed part of the Chinese club’s strong frontline. Tianjin Bohai also scored heavily from the service line, picking up a total of 9 aces. 

The competition resumes with the quarterfinal round on Monday, May 29, to determine the final four teams to contend the title. 

Hisamitsu Springs will face Taiwan Power at 11:30 local time, followed by Supreme VC against Rebisco-PSL Manila at 14:00. Tianjin Bohai Bank will play Sarmayeh Bank at 16:30, and the main event will feature Altay VC against Vietin Bank at 19:00.
