Japan retain Asian Eastern Zonal Men’s Championship title

Japan defended their title at the 2017 Asian Eastern Zonal Men's Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 win over Chinese Taipei
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, May 25, 2017 – Japan defended their title at the 2017 Asian Eastern Zonal Men’s Volleyball Championship on Friday, following their 3-1 (31-29, 16-25, 25-17, 27-25) win over Chinese Taipei.

Chinese Taipei started off strong with a 5-0 lead and maintained their edge 16-9 at the second technical timeout. Japan bounced back and tied the score at 24-all. Both squads fought hard to gain the two-point advantage, but Chinese Taipei’s attack error ended their run and gave Japan the 31-29 win in first set.

Chinese Taipei played aggressively in the second set and levelled at 25-16, but Japan retaliated with a 25-17 win in the third set.

Chinese Taipei led mostly in the fourth set, but Japan made another comeback to tie the score at 21-all. The succeeding rallies became a point-by-point battle until the deadlock at 25-all. Chinese Taipei’s best server Huang Chien-Feng failed to give his side the edge as he committed an error, then a solid block by Japan sealed the set and match victory 27-25.

In the bronze-medal match, Korea showed no mercy against hosts Mongolia and secured the podium finish with a straight set (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) triumph.

DPR Korea edged past winless Macau 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-8) to finish in fifth place, while Hong Kong finished in sixth position.

The 2018 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship will be held in Zhangjiagang City, China, as decided during the AVC Eastern Zonal Annual Conference.
