CEV and FIVB to work closely together following senior management meeting

Luxembourg, May 22, 2017 - The CEV and FIVB have been working closely to grow the game and this message once again came out of a meeting their respective senior management had on Thursday and Friday in Belgrade, Serbia. This follows in the footsteps of meetings CEV President Aleksandar Boricic and FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° had in Rome in late April where they agreed upon strengthening the cooperation between their organisations for the good of the sport.

The first such ‘operational’ meeting took place in Belgrade late last week with CEV President hosting FIVB General Director, Mr Fabio Azevedo, FIVB Secretary General, Mr Fernando Lima and Mrs Gabrielle van Zwieten, Director of the Volleyball Events Department at the FIVB. CEV Senior Vice President Renato Arena, CEV Vice President and Treasurer Özkan Mutlugil and CEV Managing Director Thorsten Endres all attended the meeting as well.

The parties agreed upon the necessity to improve the cooperation between the respective institutions, by working closely on a daily basis, exchanging views and information on ongoing projects and activities planned for the future, and holding regular meetings between the management of the two organisations.

The international calendar and especially the provision of an ‘open’ calendar was at the core of the discussions, as FIVB and CEV have agreed on the importance of protecting club competitions and activities in Europe and of reducing the number of activities involving top players and teams, with a focus on quality rather than on quantity. As a result, the FIVB and the CEV will work closely together to define a hierarchy of competitions and identify specific slots for their organisation and delivery.

The same applies to beach volleyball and snow volleyball, where CEV and FIVB will closely cooperate to grow the game in future as well as to development programmes and activities involving youngsters, schools, etc.

CEV President Aleksandar Boricic put an emphasis on the importance of bilateral communication and mutual respect, as these can only help promote and grow the sport at all levels – a strategic goal the CEV and FIVB share. “Volleyball is one, so we belong to the same family and by working together we can only get stronger,” the CEV President said.

The parties agreed that the management and the various departments at their respective headquarters would follow up this strategic decision and implement it across their daily activities, thus further enhancing the cooperation between the CEV and FIVB at all levels.
