Hermosa Beach, Calif., USA, May 13, 2017 - California-based pairs captured the men’s and women’s gold medals here Saturday at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships at Hermosa Beach Pier.

Both pairs were seeded first in each gender’s competition as Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of the University of Southern California topped the women’s podium after Lucas Yoder (Southern California) and Michael Saeta (UC Irvine) netted the men’s gold medal.

Scheduled to compete next week in the FIVB World Tour event in Rio de Janeiro, Claes and Hughes improved their record to 7-0 in the competition by winning a pair of matches Saturday.  With the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships victories Claes and Hughes finished the 2017 collegiate season with a 55-1 math mark.

Sara Hughes

Yoder and Saeta captured all six of their matches in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships enroute to besting Jackson Bantle and Hagen Smith of UCLA in the two-set men’s finale.  All four players were competing collegiately last month for their schools while Smith is the son of legendary Sinjin Smith.

With the gold medal finishes, Claes/Hughes and Yoder/Saeta will earn a spot on a USAV collegiate beach national team, which competes throughout the U.S. and abroad at FIVB events.  Here’s Saturday’s results at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships.
