Semifinals set at USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships

 
Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of the University of Southern California are undefeated in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships with a 5-0 match mark.
Hermosa Beach, Calif., USA, May 12, 2017 - Led by highly-regarded Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of the University of Southern California, four women’s and four men’s teams advanced here Friday to the semi-finals at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships at Hermosa Beach Pier. 

Claes and Hughes, who will be playing next week in a FIVB World Tour event in Rio de Janeiro, won three matches Friday to improve their tournament mark to 5-0 and their 2017 collegiate season record to 53-1.  Last week in Gulf Shores, Ala., Claes and Hughes won four matches in leading USC to the second-straight NCAA title as the Women of Troy finished the season with a 38-1 dual record.

Hagen Smith, the son of legendary Sinjin Smith, will be competing for a spot in the men’s finals as he and Jackson Bantle from UCLA are one of three undefeated pairs in the competition along with Brett Rosenmeier/Colton Cowell of Hawai'i and Lucas Yoder/Michael Saeta from Southern California and UC Irvine, respectively.

The USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships is the first stop of the Team USA Summer Champions Series, presented by Comcast. The women's final will air live on NBCSN at 6 p.m. ET on May 13. The men's final will air taped delayed after the women's match

The winners of the event will earn a spot on a USAV collegiate beach national team, which competes throughout the U.S. and abroad at FIVB events.  Here’s Friday results and Saturday’s schedule at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships.
