Top America schools compete for collegiate championship

Gulf Shores, Ala., USA, May 5, 2017 - Top-ranked and defeating national champions Southern California and third-seeded Pepperdine defeated two schools each here Friday to advance to the finals of the winner’s bracket at the 2017 NCAA Women’s Beach Volleyball Finals.

With seven foreign players from Canada, Germany, Latvia and Puerto Rico among the 80 competitors participating in the national collegiate championships, Southern California (36-1 record) and Pepperdine (31-3) will meet Saturday afternoon with the winner advancing to Sunday’s title match with the losing school dropping into the finals of the consolation bracket.

Southern California, which is led by Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, defeated eighth-seeded South Carolina and fifth-seeded Hawai’i Friday while Pepperdine upended sixth-seeded Long Beach State and second-seeded UCLA.  Claes and Hughes, who have a 138-3 collegiate record in three-seasons together, led USC to the 2016 NCAA team title along with winning the pairs national championship.

Despite losing in the winner’s bracket semi-finals, Hawai’i (26-6) and UCLA (30-5) remain in the competition along with fourth-seeded Florida State (28-8) seventh-seeded LSU (27-7).  UCLA meets Florida State and Hawai’i plays LSU Saturday afternoon in the consolation quarter-finals.  The winner of the two consolation matches will play later Saturday after the USC-Pepperdine meeting for a spot in the finals of the loser’s bracket Sunday against the school dropping the USC-Pepperdine match.

Four Canadian players are competing in the American collegiate finale for top-seeded Southern California, UCLA and Hawai'i.   Florida State features a participant from Puerto Rico while the roster for eliminated Long Beach State includes competitors from Germany and Latvia.

When the American collegiate campaign started its sixth season of Beach Volleyball play in early March, a total of 85 foreign players from 28 countries were listed on school rosters for the 2017 campaign.  Foreign players competing the the American collegiate championships are as follows:

 

•    Southern California senior Sophie Bukovec for Ontario, Canada.

•    UCLA sophomore McNamara twins (Megan and Nicole) of Vancouver, Canada.

•    Florida State freshman Eva Torruella of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

•    Hawai'i at Moana sophomore Emily Maglio of Coquitlam, Canada.

•    Long Beach State juniors Nele Barber of Berlin, Germany and Anete Brinke of Riga, Latvia.
