Kazakhs Mashkova/Samalikova snatch gold at Can Tho Open Women's Beach Tour

Can Tho, Vietnam, May 2, 2017 - Tatyana Mashkova/Bakhtygul Samalikova of Kazakhstan were crowned champions following their remarkable 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) victory over Thailand 1’s Varapatsorn Radarong/Tanarattha Udomchavee in the final showdown of  the 2017 Can Tho Open AVC Women’s Volleyball Beach Tour in Can Tho, Vietnam on Monday.

Mashkova/Samalikova, who earlier stormed past Linline Matauatu/Joe Loti of Vanuatu in comfortable straight sets 2-0 (21-11, 21-10) in the semifinals, continued their dazzling performance in the final clash against Varapatsorn/Tanarattha, champions at last year’s Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam and silver medallists at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

Going down in the first set 18-21, Varapatsorn/Tanarattha tried to make a comeback in the second set, but their intention was not successful as they committed many unforced errors and the Kazakhs performed better in key plays. Mashkova/Samalikova took the second set 21-16 and the championship.

In the third-place playoff earlier, Thailand 2’s Rampaipruet Numwong/Khanittha Hongpak, who lost to Varapatsorn/Tanarattha 2-0 (21-8, 21-9) in the all-Thais semifinal clash, struggled hard to beat Linline Matauatu/Joe Loti from Vanuatu in three sets 2-1 (21-19,18-21,15-6).

Champions Tatyana Mashkova/Bakhtygul Samalikova of Kazakhstan claimed the gold medals plus a $3,000 cash prize, with silver medallists Varapatsorn Radarong/Tanarattha Udomchavee  and bronze medallists Rampaipruet Numwong/Khanittha Hongpak from Thailand receiving $2,250 and $1,800 respectively.
