Final set in VTV9-Binhdien Cup Women’s Tournament

 
The tournament will conclude on Sunday
 Tay Ninh, Vietnam, April 29, 2017 – Former Asian Women’s Club champions Bangkok Glass from Thailand beat Yunnan U.Dianchi College from China in straight sets on Saturday to set up a final clash with VTV-Binhdien Long An on Sunday at the 11th VTV9-Binhdien Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Tay Ninh Gymnasium.

On Thursday, Bangkok Glass lost 3-1 (15-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25) to 4.25 Sport Club from DPR Korea in their last Pool B preliminary match to finish second in the pool set up a semi-final clash with Pool A winners Yunnan.

The other match on Thursday saw Fujian from China narrowly beat Vietin Bank in a hard-fought five-set thriller 25-22, 25-14, 16-25, 20-25, 15-13.

After completion of the pool round-robin preliminaries on Thursday, the top two teams from each pool advanced to Saturday’s semi-finals, with teams finishing third or fourth relegated to the 5th-8th classification round.

In Pool A, Yunnan from China was the only unbeaten team in the pool matches after three straight wins. VTV-Binhdien Long An had seven points from two wins against one loss, while Thong tin Lienviet Postbank (six points) and winless Altay (one point) from Kazakhstan finished third and fourth, respectively.

DPR Korea’s 4.25 Sport Club led Pool B with eight points from two wins against one loss, while Bangkok Glass came in second with seven points. Fujian also had seven points but ended up third in the pool due to an inferior set-points ratio. Winless defending champions Vietin Bank came in fourth place with only one point.

In Saturday’s semi-finals, Thidarat Phengvechai led Bangkok Glass with 14 points including 10 kills to help the team power past Yunnan 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19), while the home fans also had something to cheer about when VTV-Binhdien Long An stunned 4.25 Sport Club 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21).

In the 5th-8th classification round on Saturday, Vietin Bank outclassed Thongtin Lienviet Postbank in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) and China’s Fujian overwhelmed Altay (25-7, 25-12, 25-20).
