Argentine pairs win South American qualifiers for Youth Olympic Games
Asuncion, Paraguay, April 9, 2017 – Argentina’s Delfina Villar/Brenda Churin triumphed in the women’s tournament, while compatriots Mauro Zelayeta/Bautista Amieva topped the podium of the men’s tournament of the South American beach volleyball qualification tournament for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games at the Olympic Park in Asuncion.
Villar/Churin posted a 2-0 (21-17, 21-9) win over Uri Narvaez/Fredyari Mujica of Venezuela, while Zelayeta/Amieva defeated Felipe de Oliveira Miranda/Gabriel Pisco of Brazil in the final 2-0 (21-17, 21-19). Both Argentine duos dominated with unbeaten records.
Brazilian pair Anne Catherine Kolbow Soares/Nathalia Bieler Da Silva Viriato de Medeiros trounced Bolivians Maria Fernanda Canedo/Nicole Alessandra Nogales 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) to win the women’s bronze, while Venezuelan duo Gabriel Efrain 'Gabo' Gonzalez Hernandez/Oscar Osorio endured the long duel with the local team Gonzalo Aulisi/Jorge Riveros, as heavy rain interrupted play. The play resumed 30 minutes later with Gabo/Osorio capturing the men’s bronze with a 2-1 (20-22, 21-19, 15-10) win over the Paraguayans.
Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela participated in the three-day double-gender competition that was completed in 62 matches.
The third edition of the Youth Olympic Games will be held for the first time outside the Asian region. The Argentine capital of Buenos Aires will host the Games from October 6 to 18, 2018.
