Volero Zurich win their 12th Swiss Cup
The victory in the final extends Volero's winning streak to 180 across all domestic competitions.
As they are prone to, Volero once again didn't get the best start in the Cup Final. The team from Basel started strongly and did not disappoint the high expectations of the more than 2300 spectators in the venue at St-Leonard Hall in Fribourg.
But Volero quickly got back on track and went on to win the match with ease.
Laura Unternaehrer, on of the three Swiss players on the squad, was happy after the match: "Winning the Swiss Cup is always something special. The atmosphere here in Fribourg is fantastic with all the fans! I so much enjoyed playing this match."
It might not be the last title that the 24-year-old outside hitter celebrates this season, as Volero are also on track in the Swiss Championship. Zoran Terzic's team is already qualified for the semifinals, pitted against TS Volley Duedingen next weekend.
After the medal ceremony, USA's Foluke Akinradewo was awarded a Swiss Volley Indoor Award as the Most Valuable Player of this season. The 29-year-old 2014 world champion has become a role model for many young volleyball players in Switzerland.
However, there will not be much time to rest for the American middle blocker and her teammates, as the squad prepares to travel to Turkey for the rematch against VakifBank Istanbul in the European Champions League on Wednesday. After the crucial four-set away win by VakifBank in Zurich, the Turkish side has a huge advantage to continue to the Final Four in Treviso.
