Uruguayan pioneers make South American breakthrough in snow volleyball

Pablo Cardozo (left) and Lucas Diaz (right) made their snow volleyball debuts and met FIVB President Dr Ary Graca at Wagrain-Kleinarl
Lausanne, Switzerland, March 29, 2017 – Pablo Cardozo and Lucas Diaz certainly enjoyed themselves up the Austrian Alps in Wagrain-Kleinarl, when they became the first team from Uruguay and South America to play in a snow volleyball event, at the Snow Volleyball Goes Europe international tournament.

Cardozo and Diaz hail from Colonia del Sacramento and began playing volleyball for the local first division team San Pedro before they then tried their hand at beach volleyball. It has gone well so far and they finished third on the Uruguay Beach Volleyball Tour in 2016.

Their appearance in Wagrain-Kleinarl was their first international tournament, but they didn’t take long to adapt to the unusual conditions and eventually finished ninth out of 21 teams.

“Where there is volleyball, we will be there as well,” Cardozo said. “We are beach volleyball players. We are in love with the sport and very passionate about it.

“We saw snow volleyball on the internet. We thought it was crazy, but why not? So we started preparing our trip to Europe. We are proud to make history in snow volleyball for our country and we want to continue playing this sport.

"We hope that there will be more opportunities for non-European athletes to play competitively and we want to come back here next year.”
