European snow volleyball tour to kick off in Turkey
The 2017 Snow Volleyball European Tour will kick off on Feb. 17 in the Turkish ski resort of Mt. Erciyes. Twenty-four teams will take part in Turkey’s first snow volleyball tournament.
“With this organization, Mt. Erciyes will pass the test to become the fourth leg of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour in Europe,” Recep Arifoglu, the general coordinator of the Radisson Blu Hotel, told the Daily Sabah.
Snow volleyball made its debut in Austria and is now popular in various European countries, including the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Russia, Italy and Germany.
Played on a snow court, snow volleyball has the same rules as beach volleyball and is recognized by the FIVB.
Snow volleyball attracted the attention of the European Volleyball Federation in 2015 when it was acknowledged as an official branch of volleyball. A European tour was established in 2016 covering events in Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy. More countries are expected to participate in snow volleyball tournaments in the future.
Total prize money at the Turkish event with be $10,000, according to Arifoglu.
Mt. Erciyes is the highest mountain in central Anatolia, located in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, with a summit reaching 3,916 meters above sea level.
