Children’s volleyball fest a major success in Baja California

More than 500 boys and girls participated at the festival in Tijuana
Tijuana, Mexico, December 18, 2017 – The Children’s “Volleyball Your Way” Fest proved to be a big success after a huge response at the FIVB-NORCECA Regional Development Centre.

More than 500 youngsters, coaches and others enjoyed a great experience on the six courts that were installed on a football field. Volleyball clinics and practice on the sport’s fundamentals took place, as well as a number of matches.

Coaches Ana Ibis Diaz and Oscar Licea were among those directing some of the sessions, which were preceded by warm-up activities. FIVB instructors Argelio Hernandez and Juan Cartagena were also involved, along with Mexican Olympic player and NORCECA Confederation member Cesar Osuna Bramble.

With so many girls and boys attending, the festival is also seen as an important opportunity to search for and discover new talent.

“We found several kids with great skills for volleyball in this festival and we’re glad for that,” said Diaz, a former Cuban Olympian.

“We are very happy to be here,” said Juan Cartagena. “These kinds of events are very important for our sport. Basically, Mini Volleyball is a level where the development work is stronger for NORCECA and FIVB. These kinds of events are very useful and this strength is the foundation of volleyball.”

He added: “The FIVB looks forward to organising more events like this during competitions such as the World Grand Prix and the World League. The festivals are held simultaneously outside the stadiums and official venues, and they have been successful in terms of popularising and developing the sport.

“I’m grateful to Mexico for taking this initiative through the Development Centre of Baja California. This is one of the most successful centres in volleyball.”

On behalf of the Centre’s General Director and Head of the Baja California Sports and Physical Culture Institute, Saul Castro Verdugo, Operations Director Alberto Arreola expressed his appreciation for the support of those attending and the instructors, and for the good response for this first edition of the Volleyball Festival. He added that a second edition is expected to take place in 2017 in the city of Mexicali.
