Argentina earn ticket to Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Caracas, Venezuela, October 11, 2015 – Argentina secured the Rio 2016 Olympic Games berth when they captured gold at the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament with their 3-2 (25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-27, 15-12) defeat of hosts Venezuela in front of 5,000 fans at the La Guaira Stadium on Sunday.
Argentina’s Ezequiel Palacios topped all scorers with 19 points, while Willner Rivas scored 18 markers for Venezuela.
In the bronze medal match, Chile defeated Colombia 3-2 (34-36, 25-20, 25-18, 28-30, 15-10). Liberman Agamez from Colombia finished as top scorer as he registered 35 points, while Chile’s Sebastian Gevert scored 22 points and was named Most Valuable Player.
The Chilean team and coach Daniel Nejamkin celebrated their third place victory and the chance to participate in the World Olympic Qualification Tournament for the last berth to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Venezuela, which finished in second place, will join the top three ranked teams from Asia in the FIVB ranking; the second and third placed teams from the European Olympic Qualification tournament, and the second placed team from the NORCECA Qualification Tournament in the World Olympic Qualification Tournament that will take place in Japan between the period of May 14 to June 5 next year. The best ranked Asian team and the top three ranked teams from this tournament will qualify for the Olympics.
Chile, which finished third in the continental qualification tournament, will join the third placed team from the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament and the second and third placed teams from the African Olympic Qualification Tournament to fight for the final berth at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament due to be held between May 14 to June 5 next year.
