Egypt secure a crucial victory over Cameroon at Women's World Championship qualifier
Algiers, Algeria, February 24, 2014 - Hosts Algeria started their campaign with a straight sets win over Nigeria at the 2014 Women's World Championship qualifier Africa Pool T held at Harcha Hacène Hall in Algiers on Monday, while favourites Egypt fought for more than two hours to beat Cameroon in a five set thriller.
Led by experienced stars Fatima Okazi and Lydia Olumou, Algeria overcame Nigeria 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-13) in 72 minutes. Opposite spiker Olumou led her team scorers with 14 points, while Nigeria's Esther Dusu led her team scorers with only eight points.
Algeria started their way with a 1:0 win:loss record, while Nigeria dropped to 0:1
Egypt needed 132 minutes to overcome fighting Cameroon in an epic tiebreaker 3-2 (25-18, 26-28, 25-19, 22-25, 18-16). Right attacker Aya Elshami led the Egyptian scorers with 21 points while Cameroon's Eba'a Mbala led her team with 20 points.
Egypt led the competition with a 2:0 win:loss ratio, while Cameroon dropped to 1:1.
The winner of the six nation tournament will earn a ticket to the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship Italy 2014, which will take place from September 23 to October 12.
