Gibb named USA man of the beach

Colorado Springs, USA, December 20, 2013 – Jacob Gibb marked his first year playing alongside Casey Patterson on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour by being named USA Volleyball male beach player of the year.

Gibb teamed up with Patterson at the start of the year after his former partner Sean Rosenthal, with whom he won the 2012 World Tour title, paired up with 2008 Olympic champion Phil Dalhausser.

“Winning athlete of the year, I’m very honoured by that,” Gibb said before paying tribute to Patterson. “But one thing that is overlooked is that I’ve been hitting the sets of the best setter in the world. Nobody ever writes about that; it’s an amazing gift. He’s made my life a lot easier.

“It’s all about our team. You put together the best team you can. You put yourself in a place where you can succeed.”

The pair made an immediate impact when they won the first FIVB Grand Slam of the season in Shanghai and then won silver at both the Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina and the FIVB World Cup Final.

They missed out in the medals in The Hague, Rome and the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, but were back on the podium at the Gstaad Grand Slam.

“The highlight (of the season) was winning the Grand Slam in Shanghai,” Gibb said. “It was Casey’s first international win. To win the first Grand Slam of the year was cool and rewarding.”
