Guatemala City, Guatemala, February 11, 2013 – Hosts Guatemala were crowned as Central American men’s champions following their 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 17-25, 25-22) victory over defending champions Costa Rica on Friday.
The home team finished with a 4-1 win-loss record and the victory earned Guatemala a ticket to the NORCECA Men's Continental Championship to be held on September 21-29 in Langley, Canada.
MVP and best server Andy Leonardo contributed 19 points while three other teammates finished with double figures in the score charts: Oscar García (13), Moisés Reyes (11) and José González (10). Costa Rica’s Richard Smith, the top scorer and best spiker of the competition, had a match-high 23 points.
Players who received individual awards during the closing ceremony presided over by Marta Centeno, FIVB Executive Vice President and AFECAVOL President, included Costa Rica’s Abelardo Rodriguez as best receiver, Honduras’ Luis Membreño and Wilfredo López as best setter and best blocker respectively, El Salvador’s Daniel Martín as best digger and Guatemala’s Tirso Pineda as best libero.
In the other matches of Friday, El Salvador defeated Nicaragua in five sets (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 14-25, 15-10) and Panama upset Honduras 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22).
