USA men’s
Volleyball roster set for International Sports Invitational
Colorado, USA, June 1, 2005 - Four Olympians from the USA men’s
national Volleyball team that finished fourth at the 2004 Summer
Games in Athens, Greece, highlight the roster for the 2005
International Sports Invitational, it was announced Wednesday.
Two-time Olympian Tom Hoff, a veteran of the 2000 and 2004 Games,
joins 2004 Olympians Phil Eatherton, Riley Salmon and Donald
Suxho on the list of 15 players travelling to San Diego for the
four-team tournament that begins in one week.
“The International Sports Invitational will significantly help
us in terms of our preparation for our major events at the end
of the summer,” said first-year Team USA head coach Hugh
McCutcheon. “We are very grateful to the USOC for helping to
organize this tournament and we would like to see something like
this become an annual fixture.”
Also included on the roster are four of Team USA’s six Olympic
alternates from last year’s Athens squad: Rich Lambourne; Dave
McKienzie; Jim Polster; and Chris Seiffert.
The event will take place at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the
University of San Diego campus and will feature the USA Men’s
National Team as well as teams from Australia, China and the
Netherlands.
“It’s great that it’s going to happen and we’re looking forward
to going to San Diego,” added McCutcheon, a USA assistant coach
since 2003. “It’s going to be a good tournament; I think the
level of Volleyball will be strong. Obviously, without being in
the World League, we need as many international matches as we
can get.”
Preliminary competition in the Volleyball event will run fro
June 8-10, with the four teams competing in a round-robin
format.
The tournament semifinals (No. 1 seed vs. No. 4 seed; No. 2 seed
vs. No. 3 seed) will be on June 11, while the third-place and
championship matches are scheduled for June 12.
