Argentina to Reach Americas Cup Championship Match

6, 2005 - Jim Polster scored a team-high 20 points to lead five
players in double-figures as the USA Mens National Volleyball
Team posted a 3-2 win over Argentina in the Americas Cup
semifinals on Saturday night.
Polster ripped 16 kills with three blocks and one service ace in
the 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10 victory for the United
States , which will play 2004 Olympic gold medalist Brazil in
Sundays championship match.
The Brazilians swept Cuba 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-11) in Saturdays
other semifinal.
Obviously, it was a great win for the USA, said Team USA head
coach Hugh McCutcheon. Both teams played at a very high level.
We were able to make some great plays at key moments to win this
match. Most importantly, a lot of guys contributed to this win.
We are excited to play Brazil tomorrow.
Riley Salmon scored 18 points, Tom Hoff tallied 16 points and
Phil Eatherton and Dave McKienzie added 11 points apiece for the
Americans, who improved to 2-1 in the tournament and 11-5
overall this season.
Salmon had 16 kills and two aces, Hoff posted 16 kills,
Eatherton had eight kills and three blocks and McKienzie
registered 10 kills and one ace.
Santiago Darraidou scored a match-high 28 points on 25 kills and
three blocks for Argentina , which will now play Cuba for third
place on Sunday.
The United States , which secured a spot in the semifinals by
sweeping Cuba on Wednesday night, clinched the top seed in Group
B when Cuba swept Canada on Friday night and earned a date with
the No. 2 team from Group A, Argentina, for Saturday night. |
